A New Framework for the Extraction of Contour Lines in Scanned Topographic Maps

3D simulations requested in various applications had led to the development of fast and accurate terrain topography measurement techniques. In this paper, we are presenting a novel framework dedicated to the semiautomatic processing of scanned maps, extracting the contour lines vectors and building a digital elevation model on their basis, fulfilled by a number of stages discussed in detail throughout the work. Despite the good results obtained on a large amount of scanned maps, a completely automatic map processing technique is unrealistic and remains an open problem.

Abstract The program MICHROM for the general treatment of chromatographic data is presented. MICHROM takes part in all the stages of the analytical process. It allows determination of dead time, smoothing of chromatograms, measurement of peak parameters, fitting of skewed peaks, and deconvolution of overlapped peaks. This study was aimed to test a new methodological approach to carry out measurements of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) diffusively emitted from soils in hydrothermal-volcanic environments. This method was based on the use of a static closed-chamber (SCC) in combination with a Lumex® RA-915M analyzer that provides GEM measurements in a wide range of concentrations (from 2 to 50,000 ng m-3). On the function of cell systems in area 18. Part I

In addition to the asymmetry of the spatial coupling and of the specific temporal combination of excitation and inhibition, the non-linearity is very pronounced in area 18. Taking the sequence of a linear operation and a stationary nonlinear characteristic as a model, the experimental findings can be systematized and a cell classification specified which departs from the customary ones. The hypercomplex cell system probably originates in recurrent inhibition and leads to differentiation of the patterns along their contour line. Problems of cell classification and of the type of parallelism in the visual cortex are discussed.

Sources of groundwater contaminants in inhabited areas, located in complex geo-tectonic contexts, are often deeply interlocked, thus, making the discrimination between anthropic and natural origins difficult. In this study, we investigate the Peloritani Mountain aquifers (Sicily, Italy), using the combination of probability plots with concentration contour maps to retrieve an overall view of the groundwater geo-chemistry with a special focus on the flux of heavy metals. When Geometry Constrains Vision: Systematic Misperceptions within Geometrical Configurations.

International audience; How accurate are we in reproducing a point within a simple shape? This is the empirical question we addressed in this work. Participants were presented with a tiny disk embedded in an empty circle (Experiment 1 and 3) or in a square (Experiment 2). Shortly afterwards the disk vanished and they had to reproduce the previously seen disk position within the empty shape by means of the mouse cursor, as accurately as possible. Several loci inside each shape were tested. A SYNTHETIC MEASURE FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE PROJECT PERFORMANCE

The present paper aims to offer a synthetic project performance indicator (PPI) that aggregates two input parameters obtained by the Earned Value Analysis. The PPI is calculated by using a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) able to single out a measure based on the input parameters, instead of formulating a mathematical model that could be a troublesome task whenever complex relations among the input variables exist. The purpose is to communicate the project performance to the stakeholders in a clear and complete way, for example, describing the PPI by means of contour lines.
